My top three picks for places to eat and must-eats in Venice, Italy.
These are my top picks for must-haves while in Venice, Italy. Of course, I ate at a few places while in Venice, but unfortunately most are nothing to shout about.
Best Gelato: SuSo Gelatoteca
Located near the Rialto Bridge, SuSo is a fantastic gelateria recommended by the guide of the walking tour I was on. Rather hidden, this busy little store is nestled in the middle of buildings. They have a lot of very interesting flavours and seems like they change it up based on season. I went for my go-to gelato flavor, pistachio, although that tiramisu was seducing the heck out of me. The pistachio was one of the best Iāve ever had. It was very rich and creamy, with chunks of nuts in it. And not too sweet.

Opening hours: Daily 10am to 11pm
Best Ciccheti: Osteria Al Squero
Ciccheti is the Venetian equivalent of tapas. My friend recommended Osteria Al Squero to me, and this ended up being my favourite place for bites. Itās a cramped little shop along a canal; youāll know you arrived when you see hordes of people standing about with plastic plates and cups. It is named after the Squero, which is Venetian for a gondola workshop, that itās located right opposite of.
Ordering is interesting. Thereās no line in the cramped little shop, and you basically just wait for the person ahead of you to leave, until youāre up at the counter yourself. Itās all quite a civilized process really.
Though busy, the staff were very friendly and cordial. And so helpful too. I asked them to just give me five recommended pieces and an aperol spritz for the road. I shimmied my way out and ate by the canal ledge. All these for less than 10 Euros.

Best Local Venetian Fare: Pano Vino e San Daniele
This lovely family restaurant is a recommendation by the hotel. It is rather off-the-beaten path, but not hard to find. I was craving for a good pasta dish and their homemade tagliatalle satiated that. That heavenly tagliatalle was easily one of my best pasta dishes in Italy. My main was a nice piece of steak, though I wished it was just a tad bit more rare. Still delicious though. I spent about 60 Euros plus drinks, which is a decent price for a full European dinner.
When I dine alone I prefer to sit outside to people watchā¦ bad idea this time. I donāt really mind the cold too much, but thereās barely any traffic out here. I was advised to call ahead to reserve a place since they usually book out. But I came early so getting a seat was not a problem. Also I chose to sit outside. No one else would choose to sit outside. No one. Yeah.
